Sazerac

The Sazerac, which is probably my second favorite cocktail anymore, is sometimes called the original cocktail. It’s a perfect drink for the Super Bowl this evening if you feel like supporting the Saints, due to the drink’s origins in New Orleans. It’s an extremely refreshing mixture of rye whiskey, bitters, simple syrup, and absinthe (or pernod) garnished with a lemon peel.

My personal process for making one goes as follows:

  1. Get out two rocks glasses
  2. Fill one with ice
  3. Fill the other with 1.5 oz Rye Whiskey (Jim Beam Rye), 1 oz simple syrup, 3 dashes bitters
  4. Toss the ice out of the other glass
  5. Add about 2 drops Pernod into the cold glass
  6. Rotate the glass in your hand to coat the entire inside with Pernod
  7. Discard (read: drink) the remaining Pernod - Do not skip this step
  8. Pour the contents of the Rye mixture into the Pernod glass
  9. Add a lemon peel and add some club soda to taste

Enjoy.
