La Prima Ethiopian Yirgacheffe Review
After the recommendation of a friend, while I was in the Strip District yesterday I stopped by La Prima to pick up a new roast after running out of the India Monsoon Malabar I had from Prestogeorge. Although I’ve been drinking espresso at La Prima for many years now, this is my first time purchasing whole bean at the shop, so I was very anxious to try it out. The beans themselves looked great, not very cracked up, etc.

I loaded up the burr grinder, and ground out 3 cups worth at an 8-grind, 2 stops above espresso, which is normal grind for the Chemex 3-cup. It was soon time for the static test, and this bean did well. For some reason many coffees ground in the burr generatic massive amounts of static electricity which causes the coffee to jump everywhere when I try to spoon it into the pre-soaked filter in the Chemex. The Yirgacheffe did well in this department.

After brewing, the first sip made me think to myself “where’s the flavor?” but a moment later it hit me, a mildly fruity flavor with no acidity. The bag says this is a medium roast, and I’m used to very dark roasts so it’s a very mild coffee to me. But don’t get me wrong, this is a very easy drinking coffee that I’m very much enjoying to start off the day. I won’t bore you with tales of it tasting like smoked figs or turkish cinnamon, for I can’t pull those flavors out of a coffee. The only thing I can really get out of it is what I would call a malty dry flavor, if that makes any sense. I will say this is an excellent bean, free of any overwhelming flavor, which I would purchase again.
